Film fest!
Sep. 2nd, 2007 04:33 pmIt's that time again, time for me to get my pretentious film critic on. However, since I am on a starving student budget I can only see the films that REALLY interest me, as opposed the the ones that look like they may be kinda cool.
So far I'm planning to see:
After Sex: "An edgy relationship comedy that uses sex as a background to examine intimacy and vulnerability. It’s a humorous, sexy, sometimes crude, yet honest look at the complexity of modern day relationships told through eight separate couples."
Dishonour Defied: "Sadly, sexual crimes against women are not an uncommon thing in Pakistan. What is uncommon is for a woman to stand up for her rights and pursue justice for herself and other women"
Strong Coffee (shown as a double-feature with Dishonour Defied): "Journey to Peru with a group of independent coffee roasters to visit the inspiring women farmers involved with Café Feminino, a coffee co-operative that is having a profound effect on communities"
There's also a Gala movie about a dominatrix (Walk all over me) which I would love to see, but since it's a Gala movie it means they can charge $75 for it. Which means I won't be seeing it D: (unless, of course, someone wants to give me $75 *sad puppy eyes*)
Then, there's indescision time. Do I want to see Sci-fi and other Absurdities, a collection of shorts, or Slippery Slope which is about feminist porn? The way the scheduling is I can't see both. Which do I pick? Or should I consider my bank account and pick neither? Right now I'm leaning towards Slippery Slope, but I'm already seeing feminist movies, so maybe I could do Sci-fi? I like Sci-fi. But I also likeporn explorations of feminism and gender.
There are a few other films I'd like to see, but likely won't. Like Kivivq, Byron Chief Moon: Grey horse Rider, Monster Camp, Relationships: the short of it and Rock, Paper, Scissors. I guess I'll wait and see how badly school is kicking my ass/bank account. Then again I rarely go out to movies; the last time I went to a movie was during the Fairy Tales and Herland film festivals. So, really, spending, like, $100 on movies in one week isn't that big of a deal, right?
And there's a student discount! So, anyone else going? (Link)
Oh, I also *finally* saw the Notorious Betty Page. I was underwhelmed. Didn't hate it, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it in theatres.
